US 641 South is a heavily-trafficked two lane highway
from Murray to Paris, TN. The roadway is schedule
to be replaced by a new modern four-lane highway.
The project will be done in two phases. The first
being a one-mile stretch from Glendale Road in Murray to
Clarks River. Construction on that is expected to
begin in 2015. Right-of-way aquisition is curently
ongoing.
The other 5.6-mile portion of the highway from Clarks
River to Hazel (the KY/TN state line) isn't in the
state's six-year highway plan but was before budget
cuts. Nearly 7,000 vehicles travel this portion of
the highway each day, which includes quite a bit of
truck traffic. Efforts are underway to get this
project moved more quickly.
US 641 North is a four-lane highway (five lanes in
the city of Murray) that has served Calloway County's
transportation needs for over 20 years.
A refurbishment of the highway took place in
2000-2001 with the reconstruction of about two miles of
the southbound lanes. Those lanes didn't contain
shoulders and were actually part of the old US 641.
The entire roadway from Benton to Murray was repaved.
About 11,000 vehicles per day use this stretch of
highway at the Calloway/Marshall County line.
26,000 vehicles use it in the City of Murray.
