Kentucky Lake
Kentucky Lake is the largest body of water between
the Great Lakes and the Gulf of Mexico. Bordering
Calloway County to the east, the lake provides
significant recreational opportunities ranging from
boating to fishing.
Just 8 miles east of Kentucky Lake is Lake Barkley, a
large lake which parallels Kentucky Lake. The two
lakes are joined by a canal near Grand Rivers, KY.
The ensuing peninsula is known as the Land Between The
Lakes, a 170,000-acre National Recreation Area managed
by the US Forest Service.
HOW BIG IS KENTUCKY LAKE?
Kentucky and Barkley Lakes, joined by a free-flowing
canal, form one of the largest man-made bodies of water
in North America. Combined, the two lakes have over
4,000 miles of shoreline and over 300 miles of water,
providing a variety of boating, fishing, swimming,
hunting and other outdoor activities year-round.
FISHING
An afternoon of crappie, catfish and bass fishing on the
lake will keep you coming back for more. Kentucky Lake
is known as the “Crappie Capital” of the world and also
contains other varieties of fish like the largemouth and
smallmouth bass, spots, bluegill, red ear, white bass,
shell cracker, stripers and sauger.
ACTIVITIES
Opportunities abound for both backcountry or modern
camping, horseback riding, biking and hiking.
Additionally, the Kentucky Lakes area boasts more than
250 days a year of hunting seasons.
